Our Academy aims and objectives are solely focussed on facilitating a successful transition of players from Junior rugby to Colts, and from Colts to Senior rugby.
Our managed player-centric pathway for U16 to senior rugby is a fundamental part of Melbourne’s success, alongside the fact that the Club welcomes all players, regardless of ability or experience and has a true "One Club" philosophy.
We start the transition of U16 players through parallel training during preseason, moving to a twice weekly programme. When we feel opportunity presents, and players are comfortable and confident we combine with the Academy to begin building relationships and sharing playing experience - aiming to integrate U16 players and coaches fully into the Academy after the mid-season Christmas break. The opportunity to train alongside the senior set up provides renewed challenge and accelerates learning and development, positioning them well during their GCSE year and moving on into further education or apprenticeships.
For U17/U18 players, we play our rugby in a trail-blazing, competitive and structured fixture arrangement focused on player development and retention, with like-minded clubs across Derbyshire (and in which our U16s play as part of the Academy post-Christmas). For players 17 years old and above, we are constantly evaluating their skill levels, physical development and mental resilience with a view to introducing them to Senior rugby on a week-by-week basis as the opportunities and suitable games arise. Again, positioning them well for life as they move into work or higher education.
The Melbourne Academy is always looking to welcome players from U16 to U18 - why not come along and join us at training. You are assured of a warm welcome!
Training is 7pm Tuesdays and Thursdays at the MSP, Cockshut Lane, Melbourne.
